Stake News Check #32 from 6/04/2026 to 6/18/2026 : Security, Cooperation and Diplomacy Across Africa
Over the past two weeks, the region recorded a series of security and diplomatic developments marked by armed incidents, bilateral cooperation initiatives and diplomatic advances across West, Central and the Horn of Africa.
In Niger, heavy gunfire was heard near Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport early in the morning, prompting the deployment of a large security cordon and the temporary suspension of movement between the airport area and the city centre. Authorities did not immediately provide details on the circumstances of the incident. The event occurred several months after an armed attack targeted the same airport in January 2026. [1]
Diplomatic relations between Benin and Niger advanced further as a joint committee of experts, established following Beninese President Romuald Wadagni’s official visit to Niger in June 2026, submitted its findings to both heads of state. The two countries announced that additional consultations would be held to produce a joint report for Presidents Abdourahamane Tiani and Romuald Wadagni. The process takes place against the backdrop of the border closure between the two countries since 2023 and reflects the stated commitment of both leaders to open a new chapter in bilateral relations. In neighbouring Nigeria, the military announced the rescue of 360 people abducted by Boko Haram in the Mandara Mountains in southern Borno State. According to military authorities, the rescued individuals were transferred to secure locations where they are receiving medical and humanitarian assistance. The operation comes amid a protracted security crisis in northern Nigeria, where Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province remain active despite years of military operations. [3]
In the Central African Republic, the armed forces rejected reports circulating on social media alleging an attempted coup. Military authorities described the claims as false information intended to create confusion and undermine public confidence, while insisting that state institutions continue to function normally and that security forces remain fully operational.
