Le gouvernement togolais a annoncé la suppression de l’obligation de visa d’entrée pour tous les ressortissants africains titulaires d’un passeport valide. Une mesure présentée comme visant à renforcer l’intégration africaine et la libre circulation des personnes. Les autorités précisent que cette d’exemption, qui prend effet immédiatement, autorise des séjours de 30 jours maximum sous réserve d’une déclaration préalable en ligne et du respect des exigences sécuritaires, sanitaires et migratoires en vigueur. Sur le plan diplomatique, le ministre nigérien des Affaires étrangères, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, a effectué une visite officielle à Alger où il s’est entretenu avec son homologue algérien Ahmed Attaf. Les deux parties ont indiqué avoir échangé sur des questions diplomatiques, sécuritaires et économiques, tout en réaffirmant leur volonté de renforcer la coopération bilatérale face aux défis régionaux communs. Au Mali, les Forces armées maliennes ont annoncé avoir mené une opération dans la région de Mopti dans l’optique de mettre fin au blocus imposé depuis près d’un an à la localité de Djafarabé. Selon des sources locales, un convoi humanitaire transportant des denrées alimentaires est arrivé dans la ville après l’intervention militaire. L’état-major malien a également indiqué avoir conduit plusieurs frappes aériennes ciblées contre des groupes armés dans différentes zones du centre et du nord du pays, précisant que ces opérations s’inscrivent dans des missions offensives de reconnaissance et de sécurisation. Dans le bassin du lac Tchad, les présidents américain et nigérian ont confirmé une opération conjointe ayant conduit à la mort d’Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, présenté par les États-Unis comme un haut responsable de l’organisation État islamique. Les autorités nigérianes ont indiqué que plusieurs de ses collaborateurs auraient également été tués lors d’une frappe visant son complexe. Over the past weeks, several political, security and diplomatic developments have shaped the African landscape. The Government of Togo announced the removal of entry visa requirements for all African nationals holding a valid passport, a measure presented as part of efforts to strengthen African integration and the free movement of people across the continent. Authorities stated that the exemption, which took immediate effect, allows stays of up to 30 days, subject to an online pre-arrival declaration and compliance with existing security, health and immigration regulations. [1]

On the diplomatic front, Niger’s Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré paid an official visit to Algiers, where he held talks with his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf. Both sides stated that discussions focused on diplomatic, security and economic issues of mutual interest, while reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in response to shared regional challenges. In Mali, the Malian Armed Forces announced an operation in the Mopti region aimed at ending the blockade imposed for nearly a year on the town of Djafarabé. According to local sources, a humanitarian convoy carrying food supplies reached the town following the military operation. The Malian General Staff also reported carrying out targeted air strikes against armed groups in several areas of central and northern Mali, stating that the operations formed part of offensive reconnaissance and security missions. In the Lake Chad Basin, the United States and Nigerian Presidents confirmed a joint operation that resulted in the death of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, whom the United States described as a senior Islamic State figure. Nigerian authorities stated that several of his associates were also reportedly killed during a strike targeting his compound. Washington and Abuja presented the operation as an example of strengthened security cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the region. [4]

Finally, the African Union and India announced the postponement of the India-Africa Forum Summit scheduled to take place in New Delhi, citing the evolving health situation in parts of Africa. The decision comes as health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo face a resurgence of Ebola cases in South Kivu province. Health organisations and first responders reported multiple deaths and hundreds of suspected cases in the DRC, as well as confirmed cases in neighbouring Uganda. [5]

Over the past two weeks, Mali’s transitional authorities confirmed the death of General Sadio Camara after what they described as a targeted attack at his Kati residence carried out by elements of the JNIM, part of a series of coordinated assaults across the country on 25 April 2026. The Comité transitoire civilo-militaire (CTCM) announced that Camara did not survive the attack, that his body was transferred to the Génie militaire in Bamako, and that authorities planned an inhumation in the coming hours accompanied by military honours to salute his service to the nation. The same CTCM communiqué identified two other senior military figures as wounded in the incidents: General Modibo Koné, Director General of the Agence Nationale de la Sécurité d’État, and General Oumar Diarra, chief of staff of the armed forces. In a parallel account of the post-attack shake-up, Mali’s junta leader promoted Elisée Jean Dao to Chief of the General Staff, elevating him from Brigadier General in the National Guard to the rank of Major General as he took office on a Wednesday less than two weeks after the coordinated wave of attacks. The appointment installed Dao as successor to Oumar Diarra, whom the junta named Minister-delegate to the Minister of Defence, a portfolio now held by Mali’s transitional president and Junta Leader, General Assimi Goita, according to the junta’s announcements [2].

At the continental level, Nigeria assumed the Presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council for May 2026, taking the role amid a documented deterioration of security in the Sahel and a noted intensification of armed attacks in the region. Abuja acknowledged its own security challenges, citing persistent threats from factions of Boko Haram and armed groups active in Nigeria’s northwest, and it said it planned to draw on past experience from its December 2022 Council Presidency to guide discussions on continental security priorities [3].

Chad declared three days of national mourning after a Boko Haram ambush in the Lake Chad Basin killed two generals, following an assault two days earlier on the Barka Tolorom military base near Lake Chad that the army reported left at least 24 soldiers dead and in which it said a “significant number” of attackers were killed. The government announced mourning from midnight on Wednesday 6 May until midnight on Saturday 9 May “in memory of the martyrs” who died during attacks reported on 4 and 6 May, and observers noted an ongoing surge in activity by Boko Haram’s JAS faction in the Lake Chad region, including kidnappings and assaults on security forces [4].

Côte d’Ivoire’s government announced the dissolution of the country’s Independent Electoral Commission on Wednesday 6 May 2026, citing recurrent and strong criticism of the body responsible for organising elections, particularly regarding its independence and functioning. A government spokesperson told the public that a new mechanism to manage the electoral process would be established “prochainement”, but officials did not specify the precise form this new structure would take nor provided a deployment timetable. En Côte d’Ivoire, le gouvernement a annoncé la dissolution de la Commission électorale indépendante, organe chargé de l’organisation des élections dans le pays. Les autorités ont justifié cette décision par les critiques récurrentes visant le fonctionnement et l’indépendance de l’institution. Le gouvernement a indiqué qu’un nouveau mécanisme chargé de la gestion du processus électoral serait mis en place prochainement, sans préciser à ce stade sa composition ni son calendrier de déploiement. Au Tchad, les autorités ont décrété trois jours de deuil national après une attaque attribuée à Boko Haram contre une base militaire située dans la région du lac Tchad, ayant entraîné la mort de plusieurs soldats et de deux généraux. L’armée tchadienne a indiqué avoir également infligé des pertes aux assaillants lors des combats. Cette attaque intervient dans un contexte de recrudescence des activités de Boko Haram et de l’ISWAP dans la région du lac Tchad, malgré les opérations militaires lancées ces dernières années par les autorités tchadiennes pour réduire l’influence des groupes armés. Over the past two weeks the African Union has publicly praised Benin for the peaceful conduct and outcome of the 2026 Presidential Election , formally congratulating the president-elect Romuald Wadagni after the National Electoral Commission declared his victory on 13 April 2026, and describing the result as an expression of the popular will and a strong signal for democratic stability [1]. In an official declaration dated Thursday 16 April, the AU representative specifically commended the electoral observation mission deployed to Benin, thanking Sylvestre Ntibantunganya for his leadership and noting the professionalism of the observers mobilised, while reiterating the Commission’s commitment to support member states in strengthening democratic processes and insisting that credible, inclusive and transparent elections form the foundation for durable peace and development on the continent. [1]

Separately, the chair of the African Union, President Évariste Ndayishimiyé of Burundi, signalled an intent to deepen ties with the Alliance of States of the Sahel (AES) after meeting Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou, intimating that he now understood the objective realities of the Sahel region. . Ndayishimiyé said he planned to prepare an objective report to his peers expressing hope that the report would strengthen relations with member States of the AES, describing the AU as a bridge to link the Burkinabè people and institutions with other African peoples and institutions. In Dakar, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye opened the tenth edition of the International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa, convening leaders including Sierra Leone’s Julius Maada Bio and Mauritania’s Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani at the launch ceremony]. Faye recalled the forum’s ten-year history emphasizing its central objective: for Africa to conceive its own security and define its own strategic choices. Faye characterised the global context as one marked by tensions and conflicts and argued that Africa must strengthen its capacity to act, highlighting the need to manage African resources better, to finance local security forces, prioritize youth investment, and the need to reframe sovereignty as a requirement of management and responsibility rather than merely a political claim. In Accra, Nigerian defence technology company Terra Industries announced plans to establish what it described as Africa’s largest drone manufacturing facility, a 34,000-square-foot plant named Pax-2 intended to serve as its main production hub for drone and counter-drone systems across the region. Terra said construction neared completion and targeted full operations by the end of June 2026, projecting that output would reach 50,000 units annually by 2028 and that the project would create roughly 120 engineering jobs in Ghana. Terra plans to manufacture systems including the Archer VTOL drone for long-range surveillance and strike missions, the Iroko UAV for rapid tactical deployment, and Kama, a high-speed interceptor capable of reaching up to 300 kilometres per hour and engineered for large-scale production. Nigeria’s military suffered a high-profile setback when a predawn assault on a base in Benisheikh, Borno State, killed a senior officer and several soldiers, a development confirmed by army spokesman Michael Onoja who said the base was targeted but that troops repelled the invaders. President Bola Tinubu expressed “deep sadness” and confirmed the death of Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation HADIN KAI, describing him as a “gallant officer” who fell alongside his soldiers while defending the State. Also, President Tinubu pledged continued federal cooperation, sustained offensives,additional equipment and welfare support for frontline troops, urging the military high command and frontline troops to remain steadfast in the face of what he characterised as a desperate insurgent counterattack, while calling on the public and media to support the armed forces and to desist from celebrating or condoning attacks on troops. Enfin, au Ghana, l’entreprise nigériane de technologie de défense Terra Industries a annoncé la création d’une usine de fabrication de drones présentée comme la plus grande d’Afrique, avec une mise en service prévue d’ici fin juin 2026. Le site, destiné à devenir un centre de production régional, devrait atteindre une capacité annuelle de 50 000 unités d’ici 2028 et générer environ 120 emplois d’ingénierie. Le projet s’inscrit dans une stratégie visant à renforcer les capacités industrielles et technologiques sur le continent, avec le développement de plusieurs types de drones et systèmes de défense. Media coverage on terrorism and counterterrorism in Africa has been the focus of scholarly debate over the past decade. Critical scholars contend that a common journalistic angle reporting on terrorism-related violence on the continent tends to amplify negative narratives of the "weak state" (Mickler, Suleiman, and Maiangwa 2019; Adekunle 2025). This dataset contributes to that debate by questioning how international, regional and national media report on terrorism-related developments in West Africa, primarily from the Al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nusra wa al-Muslimin (JNIM). 4 It comprises 485 news reports from international, regional and local media outlets, categorised by country, type of publication and nature of the coverage topic. The dataset is grounded in the newsworthiness theory, which suggests that the media is systematically biased towards sensational or negative headlines, deemed as "newsworthy" (Galtung and Ruge 1965; Harrington 1989). This dataset may underpin future work on how the newsworthiness theory operationalises in terrorism-related media coverage in West Africa. This dataset also focuses on a particular time period of a post-USAID funding environment, providing space for tracking developments following massive international development funding cuts.

Over the past two weeks, Africa has recorded a series of political, security and economic developments with immediate implications for governance and regional cooperation.

In Benin, the Economic Community of West African States announced the appointment of former Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo to lead its electoral observation mission for the presidential election scheduled for April 12, with deployment planned from April 7 to 15 in line with its protocol on democracy and good governance. Two candidacies have been confirmed: Romuald Wadagni, representing the ruling majority and current Minister of Economy and Finance, and Paul Hounkpè, candidate of the Forces Cauris for an Emerging Benin (FCBE).[1]

In Burkina Faso, military leader Ibrahim Traoré expressed, during a state television interview, a rejection of liberal democratic norms, stating that the country would follow its own approach. Having come to power through a coup three years ago, he had initially pledged a return to civilian rule by July 2024, but authorities have since extended the transition by five years. Concerns related to rights and security were also noted, including actions targeting opposition figures, media and civil society actors.[2]

In Nigeria, security services received more than 800 individuals deported from Niger at the Jibia-Magama border in Katsina State. According to an operational report, the individuals, comprising men, women and children, arrived on eight buses and underwent identification procedures involving multiple security agencies before a planned transfer to Kano State.[3]

In the Central African Republic, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra was sworn in for a third consecutive term on March 30 in Bangui. Re-elected in December with 77.90% of the vote according to official results, in a poll contested by the opposition, he outlined peace, security and national unity as his priorities. The ceremony gathered around 20,000 attendees and several African leaders. The constitutional framework adopted in 2023 allowed his candidacy, in a security context described as fragile despite some improvements.[4]

At the regional level, the Economic Community of West African States and the International Monetary Fund signed an agreement on March 27 in Abuja aimed at strengthening macroeconomic governance and coordinating economic policies in West Africa. The agreement includes enhanced policy dialogue, increased technical assistance and regional macroeconomic monitoring, and comes amid moderate but uneven economic growth, with persistent challenges related to inflation, public debt, global economic uncertainty and regional integration.[5]

Cet accord prévoit notamment un renforcement du dialogue politique, une assistance technique accrue et un suivi macroéconomique régional. Several political and security developments have recently been reported in West Africa and beyond, involving diplomatic initiatives, cooperation agreements, and security incidents.

At the United Nations, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming the transatlantic slave trade of Africans as the “most serious crime against humanity.” Led by Ghana and supported by 123 countries, the text was approved despite opposition from some states, including the United States, and abstentions from several European countries. The initiative aims to acknowledge the historical injustices linked to the transatlantic slave trade and to encourage reparative measures, particularly in education and economic development. However, the resolution is non-binding, and the concrete implementation of reparations remains uncertain. [1]

On the security front, Niger and Algeria announced strengthened cooperation following an official visit by the Algerian Prime Minister to Niamey. Both countries, facing shared threats in the Sahel-Saharan region, reaffirmed their collaboration in combating terrorism, violent extremism, and cross-border crime. Several agreements were also signed across various economic sectors, including energy, industry, and health. [2]

In eastern Chad, a drone attack near the border with Sudan resulted in the deaths of 17 civilians. Chadian authorities described the incident as a “serious act of aggression” and reinforced security measures, including the full closure of the border and the deployment of defense forces on high alert. The government also mentioned the possibility of retaliatory measures while calling for international mobilization in response to the situation. [3]

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso and the United States expressed their willingness to strengthen their security and economic cooperation following talks in Ouagadougou between Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré and a U.S. official. The discussions focused on reviving bilateral relations, counterterrorism efforts, and the development of trade exchanges, in a context of gradual normalization of ties after recent tensions. [4]

Finally, Ghana signed a defense partnership with the European Union aimed at strengthening cooperation in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and crisis response. The agreement comes amid rising jihadist violence in the Sahel, with the stated objective of preventing its spread to coastal West African countries. [5]

Plusieurs développements politiques et sécuritaires ont été enregistrés dans l’actualité Ouest africaine et au-delà, impliquant également des initiatives diplomatiques, des accords de coopération et des incidents sécuritaires.

Au Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou et Washington ont exprimé leur volonté de renforcer leur coopération sécuritaire et économique à l’issue d’échanges dans la capitale burkinabè entre le ministre des Affaires étrangères Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré et Nick Checker, le nouveau patron du bureau des affaires africaines du département d’État américain. Les discussions ont porté sur la relance des relations bilatérales, la lutte contre le terrorisme et le développement des échanges commerciaux, dans un contexte de reprise progressive des liens après des tensions récentes.[1]

Au même moment, le Niger et l’Algérie ont annoncé un renforcement de leur coopération, à l’issue d’une visite officielle du Premier ministre algérien à Niamey . Les deux pays, confrontés à des menaces communes dans la région sahélo-saharienne, ont réaffirmé leur collaboration contre le terrorisme, l’extrémisme violent et la criminalité transfrontalière. Plusieurs accords ont également été signés dans des secteurs économiques variés, dont l’énergie, l’industrie et la santé.[2]

De son côté, le Ghana a signé un partenariat de défense avec l’Union européenne, visant à renforcer la coopération en matière de lutte contre le terrorisme, de partage de renseignements et de gestion des crises. Cet accord intervient dans un contexte de montée des violences jihadistes dans le Sahel, avec un objectif affiché de prévenir leur extension vers les pays côtiers d’Afrique de l’Ouest.[3]

Dans l’est du Tchad, une attaque de drone survenue près de la frontière avec le Soudan a causé la mort de 17 civils. Les autorités tchadiennes ont qualifié l’incident d’« agression grave » et ont renforcé leur dispositif sécuritaire, notamment par la fermeture complète de la frontière et la mise en alerte des forces de défense. Le gouvernement a également évoqué la possibilité de mesures de riposte, tout en appelant à une mobilisation internationale face à la situation.[4]

Enfin, à l’ Organisation des Nations unies (ONU) , l’Assemblée générale a adopté une résolution proclamant la traite des esclaves africains comme le « plus grave crime contre l’humanité ». Porté par le Ghana et soutenu par 123 États, le texte a été approuvé malgré l’opposition de certains pays, dont les États-Unis, et l’abstention de plusieurs États européens. Cette initiative vise à reconnaître les injustices historiques liées à la traite transatlantique et à encourager des mesures de réparation, notamment dans les domaines éducatifs et économiques. Toutefois, la résolution reste non contraignante et les modalités concrètes de mise en œuvre des réparations demeurent incertaines.[5]

N’Dah Olivier Sambiéni is a young advocate for inclusion and community development in the Atacora department. With a professional degree in applied economics, he has mobilized his NGO Tibena to strengthen ties with local communities and build expertise in managing social projects.

Since 2018, Olivier has actively participated in the “Useful Holidays Program,” an initiative that significantly influenced his journey through 2024. Through this program, he promoted youth entrepreneurship, socio-professional integration, and digital skills development.

In 2024, he became the administrative and financial manager of Tibena NGO, playing a key role in the PiSSCA Project (Innovative Project of Civil Societies and Coalitions of Actors). This initiative focuses on strengthening resilience and economic inclusion of women producers and processors of soy, shea, and maize in Cobly and Boukombé. Olivier contributed to the creation of two local cooperatives and supported the training of 120 women in producing green charcoal and eco-friendly fire starters.

His commitment is rooted in his experience within the school scouting movement, which instilled in him a strong sense of service and community responsibility and a desire to contribute to the well-being of his community. As a supervisor and lead trainer, he has mentored over one hundred young people in Atacora and Donga, consolidating his role as a mentor and catalyst for change.

Olivier envisions a future where youth play a central role in community development. His participation in the CSO Program-Cohort 2 of Stake experts reflects this vision by equipping him with the skills and knowledge necessary to empower youth and foster their involvement in community development initiatives representing an opportunity for learning and professionalization to better serve his community by enhancing his ability to implement effective programs that engage youth in meaningful ways.

TIBENA NGO: Actor of Peace and Community Development

Founded in 2019 and officially registered, Tibena NGO operates in the departments of Atacora (Cobly, Boukoumbé, Matéri) and Donga (Djougou, Ouaké). Its mission is to strengthen the capacities of youth, women, and local communities to promote peace, social cohesion, and sustainable development.

Emerging from cultural initiatives organized during school holidays to highlight traditions and engage youth, Tibene now works across diverse areas, entrepreneurship, education, local governance, sustainable agriculture, culture, and environmental protection.

Among its notable actions in the PiSSCA Project, it has conducted awareness campaigns against violent extremism and terrorism, reaching more than 500 beneficiaries.

Structured around a board of Directors, an Executive Directorate, and volunteers, Tibena NGO adopts a participatory and digital approach to maximize impact. It mobilizes local actors and sustains its initiatives through partnerships and cooperatives while integrating the principles of inclusion, accountability, and community participation.

Several political and security developments have recently taken place across West Africa. In Benin, the National Police issued wanted notices for nine individuals suspected of involvement in the attempted coup of 7 December 2025 targeting President Patrice Talon, identifying Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri as the alleged leader of the plot. Also, among the wanted are Captains Castro Sambieni and Ousmane Samary. [1]

In Niger, authorities reported that armed individuals on motorcycles attacked the Tahoua airport airbase during the night of 9 March 2026, damaging several drone hangars. Security forces said several attackers were neutralized and five suspects arrested. [2]

On the Mali side,On 28 January, the Court of Justice of the West African Economic and Monetary Union annulled sanctions imposed on Mali in January 2022 by the conference of heads of state of the Union, ruling that the measures lacked a legal basis. The sanctions, which included border closures and financial restrictions, had been introduced in coordination with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following the military takeover in Mali. [3]

Meanwhile, Guinea released 16 soldiers and police officers from Sierra Leone who had been detained earlier in the week following a border incident in the town of Kalieyereh, after a delegation led by Sierra Leone’s foreign minister visited Conakry. [4]

At the regional level, military chiefs from member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) meeting in Freetown, discussed plans to establish a new regional force of about 2,000 troops to address terrorism and insecurity across West Africa, although operational and financing details are still under discussion. [5]

Au Bénin, la police nationale a lancé des avis de recherche contre neuf personnes soupçonnées d’implication dans la tentative de coup d’État du 7 décembre 2025 visant le président Patrice Talon, en identifiant le lieutenant-colonel Pascal Tigri comme le principal suspect. Au Niger, les autorités ont annoncé qu’un groupe d’hommes armés à moto avait attaqué la base aérienne de l’aéroport de Tahoua dans la nuit du 9 mars 2026, endommageant plusieurs hangars de drones ; les forces de sécurité ont indiqué que plusieurs assaillants avaient été neutralisés et cinq suspects arrêtés. Du côté du Mali, le 28 janvier dernier, la Cour de justice de l’Union économique et monétaire ouest-africaine (UEMOA) a annulé les sanctions imposées au pays en janvier 2022 par la Conférence des chefs d’État de l’organisation, estimant que ces mesures étaient dépourvues de base légale. Ces sanctions avaient été adoptées en coordination avec la Communauté économique des États de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (CEDEAO) après la prise de pouvoir par les militaires au Mali et comprenaient notamment la fermeture des frontières et des restrictions financières. [3]

Cependant, la Guinée a libéré seize militaires et policiers sierra-léonais arrêtés plus tôt dans la semaine à la suite d’un incident frontalier dans la localité de Kalieyereh, après la visite à Conakry d’une délégation conduite par le ministre sierra-léonais des Affaires étrangères. [4]

Enfin, les chefs d’état-major de plusieurs pays membres de la CEDEAO, réunis à Freetown, ont discuté de la création d’une nouvelle force régionale d’environ 2 000 soldats destinée à lutter contre le terrorisme et l’insécurité en Afrique de l’Ouest, tandis que les modalités opérationnelles et de financement restent en discussion. [5]

En 2024, est devenu responsable administratif et financier de l’ONG Tibena et joue un rôle clé dans le projet PiSSCA (Projet innovant des Sociétés Civiles et Coalitions d’Acteurs), axé sur le renforcement de la résilience et de l’inclusion économique des femmes productrices et transformatrices de soja, de karité et de maïs dans les communes de Cobly et Boukombé. À ce titre, il a participé à la constitution à la création de deux coopératives locales, tout en accompagnant la formation de 120 femmes à la production de charbon vert et d’allume-feu écologique.

Son engagement trouve ses racines dans son expérience au sein du mouvement du scoutisme scolaire, qui a renforcé son sens du service et son désir de contribuer à l’épanouissement de sa communauté. En tant que superviseur et formateur principal, il a formé plus de cent jeunes dans l’Atacora et la Donga, consolidant ainsi son rôle de mentor et de catalyseur de changement.

Olivier aspire à un avenir meilleur avec une implication massive des jeunes dans le développement de leur communauté. Sa participation au programme CSO – Cohorte 2 de Stake experts, s’inscrit dans cette dynamique, représentant pour lui une opportunité d’apprentissage et de professionnalisation afin de mieux servir sa communauté.

TIBENA ONG : Acteur de paix et de développement communautaire.

Pour nous, cet engagement va au-delà de la simple signature d’un formulaire. Il reflète notre conviction d’une réalité observée sur le terrain : dans les contextes fragiles ou en transition, la stabilité ne dépend pas uniquement des dispositifs sécuritaires, mais aussi de la légitimité des institutions et de la confiance que leur accordent l’ensemble des citoyens. Inclure les femmes dans les processus de prise de décision enrichit les institutions grâce à la diversité des perspectives prises en compte et contribue à renforcer la cohésion sociale et à consolider la confiance là où elle est la plus fragile. Le rôle des femmes dans les réseaux économiques locaux et les dynamiques communautaires en fait un levier stratégique pour bâtir des institutions résilientes et pertinentes.

Notre expérience sur le terrain illustre parfaitement cet impact concret. Dans le cadre d’un projet financé par le Mécanisme de stabilité des états côtiers (MSEC) de l’Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM), portant sur la cohésion intercommunautaire des femmes dans le village de Guéné au Bénin (département de l’Alibori), nous avons observé comment des groupements de femmes issus de plusieurs villages et de différents horizons ethniques ont pu créer les changements positifs qu’elles souhaitaient voir dans leurs propres communautés. Ces actions ont renforcé l’action collective, favorisé la coopération entre femmes de différents horizons et permis l’accumulation de ressources financières collectives, démontrant l’efficacité et la durabilité de leurs initiatives.

En rejoignant les WEPs, Stake experts s’engage à continuer de contribuer à la création de ces changements positifs, à la fois en tant qu’entreprise et à travers le travail et les recherches que nous menons au sein des communautés locales en Afrique de l’Ouest. Nous visons à continuer d’intégrer systématiquement une perspective inclusive dans nos analyses, nos recommandations et nos interventions. For us, this commitment goes beyond merely signing a form. It reflects our conviction of a reality observed on the ground: in fragile or transitional contexts, stability does not depend solely on security measures, but also on the legitimacy of and trust in institutions among all citizens. Including women in decision-making processes enriches institutions with a diversity of perspectives and contributes to strengthening social cohesion and consolidating trust where it is most fragile. Women’s role in local economic networks and community dynamics makes them a strategic lever for building resilient and relevant institutions.

Our experience in the field perfectly illustrates this tangible impact. As part of an International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Coastal States Stability Mechanism (CSSM)-funded project on women interncommunity cohesion in Benin’s Guéné village (Alibori department), we witnessed how women’s groups across several villages and ethnic backgrounds were able to create the positive changes they longed for in their own communities. These actions strengthened collective action, fostered cooperation between women of different backgrounds, and enabled the accumulation of collective financial resources, demonstrating the effectiveness and sustainability of their initiatives.

By joining the WEPs, Stake experts commits to continue to contribute to creating these positive changes, both as a company and in the work and research that we do in West Africa’s local communities. We aim to continue to systematically integrate a gender perspective into our analyses, recommendations, and interventions. We consider that the inclusion of women is not only a moral imperative. Affissou Alao ABDOUL-KARIM is a committed advocate for social cohesion and community development, harnessing the transformative power of sport and education. Holding a professional degree in English didactics, he integrates pedagogy, civic engagement, and humanitarian action to empower young people and foster inclusive communities.

As a football coach and active member of the Beninese Red Cross (Malanville local committee), Abdoul-Karim dedicates his efforts to northern Benin’s most vulnerable areas, promoting peace, inclusion, and solidarity.

His work reflects three core passions: sport, education, and social action. He views football not only as a game but also as a platform for discipline, mentorship , and the transmission of values such as respect, tolerance, and teamwork. His academic training further reinforced his conviction that education is a cornerstone of human development and conflict prevention.

A defining milestone in his journey was his participation in the Global Youth Dialogue, where he engaged with peers from conflict-affected regions. Inspired by their resilience and determination, he strengthened his belief that youth can be a powerful agent of peace and social transformation, even in fragile contexts.

Abdoul-Karim’s contributions are multifaceted, combining sport, humanitarian action, and civic engagement to strengthen community resilience. As a football coach, he invests deeply in training young players , emphasizing human values alongside athletic performance. He also leads humanitarian initiatives with the Red Cross, including awareness campaigns, solidarity actions, and community assistance. Beyond this, he actively participates in projects that foster dialogue, coexistence, and social cohesion among youth, while representing his community in national consultation frameworks.

Guided by values of dignity, solidarity, integrity, responsibility, and commitment, Abdoul-Karim champions dialogue, inclusion, and non-violence as foundations of lasting peace. He acts with humility and perseverance, convinced that change begins with leading by example.

His vision is to nurture a responsible, engaged generation of youth who serve as agents of peace. He leverages sport, education, and community dialogue as strategic tools for social transformation, with long-term ambitions to design and coordinate structured initiatives for conflict prevention, social cohesion, and youth empowerment at local and regional levels. Currently, he is developing impactful sports programs, peace awareness initiatives, and strengthening his leadership skills. His participation in the CSO – Cohort 2 program of STAKE EXPERTS represents a strategic opportunity for learning, networking, and professional growth to better serve his community.

AJECOP: Youth for Peace and Inclusion in Northern Benin

Founded in July 2024 in Malanville by a collective of committed young people, the Association of Youth for Peaceful Coexistence (AJECOP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting peace, tolerance, and social cohesion in a context marked by tension. With youth at the center of its mission, AJECOP harnesses education and sport as levers of transformation, creating safe spaces for vulnerable children and young people to learn, dialogue, and express themselves.

Its initiatives include academic support for struggling students, solidarity actions for vulnerable families, intercommunity dialogue platforms that foster mutual understanding, and an inclusive football tournament bringing together boys and girls to promote

Gender equality and reduce discrimination. AJECOP adopts a participatory and innovative approach, integrating digital tools for awareness and mobilization, while relying on a dynamic executive board, dedicated volunteers, and local partnerships to sustain its work.

Despite challenges such as limited resources and sociocultural barriers, AJECOP aspires to become a structured and credible actor of social cohesion in northern Benin. Through the CSO Fellowship program, the association aims to strengthen its governance, expand the impact of its interventions, and enhance its visibility at local and regional levels.

Sa formation en didactique anglaise a renforcé sa conviction que l’éducation constitue un pilier fondamental du développement humain et de la prévention des conflits.

Le véritable tournant de son engagement citoyen fut sa participation au Dialogue mondial de la jeunesse. Cette expérience déterminante lui a permis d’échanger avec des jeunes issus de pays confrontés à des conflits majeurs. Marqué par leur résilience et leur détermination, il a consolidé sa conviction que la jeunesse peut être une motrice essentielle de paix et de transformation sociale, même dans des contextes fragiles.

Ses principales contributions se manifestent à travers plusieurs engagements complémentaires. Il consacre une part importante de son énergie à l’encadrement et à la formation de jeunes footballeurs, en mettant autant l’accent sur les valeurs humaines que sur la performance sportive. Parallèlement, il s’investit dans des actions humanitaires au sein de la Croix-Rouge béninoise, notamment par des initiatives de sensibilisation, de solidarité et d’assistance communautaire. Son implication se traduit également par une participation active à des projets de promotion du vivre-ensemble, du dialogue et de la cohésion sociale auprès des jeunes. Enfin, il joue un rôle essentiel au sein de cadres nationaux de concertation, où il porte la voix de sa communauté et contribue à la réflexion collective.

AJECOP : Jeunesse engagée pour la paix et l’inclusion au nord du Bénin

Fondée en juillet 2024 à Malanville par un collectif de jeunes engagés, l’Association des Jeunes pour une Cohabitation Pacifique (AJECOP) est une organisation communautaire à but non lucratif dédiée à la promotion de la paix, de la tolérance et du vivre-ensemble dans un contexte marqué par des tensions sociales. Plaçant la jeunesse au cœur de son action, elle mobilise l’éducation et le sport comme leviers de transformation sociale, en renforçant la cohésion et l’inclusion des enfants et jeunes vulnérables à travers des espaces sûrs d’apprentissage, de dialogue et d’expression. Ses réalisations incluent des soutiens scolaires pour les enfants en difficulté, des actions de solidarité envers les familles vulnérables, des cadres de dialogue intercommunautaire favorisant la compréhension mutuelle, ainsi qu’une compétition de football inclusive réunissant filles et garçons pour promouvoir l’égalité de genre et réduire les discriminations. AJECOP adopte une approche participative et innovante, intégrant des outils numériques pour sensibiliser et mobiliser, et s’appuie sur un bureau exécutif dynamique, des bénévoles engagés et des partenariats locaux pour assurer la pérennité de ses actions. Florent ABALOROU is a young leader passionate about civic engagement and community development. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Modern Literature. As co-founder of the GBAMBA association and Monitoring & Evaluation Officer since 2022, he has coordinated community resilience projects funded by USAID-OTI, notably focusing on training and equipping young people for cashew nut processing in Copargo.

His journey has been deeply shaped by field experiences, particularly within the NGO Havre de Paix, where he contributed to projects on conflict prevention, combating gender-based violence, addressing early and forced marriage, and promoting children’s rights, with support from partners such as UNICEF, Canada, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. He began as a mentor for adolescents before becoming a school facilitator.

Driven by his commitment, Florent was elected Youth Mayor of Copargo and represents young people at the Communal Observatory for Education (OCE-Copargo). He is also a member of the Jeunes Amour et Vie club, where he continues his work in youth empowerment.

He is currently developing a multidimensional approach to community development, built around several pillars: promoting peace and social cohesion through sports tournaments, creating a school of governance and public administration to train future leaders, recognizing young entrepreneurs through excellence awards, establishing platforms for peaceful dialogue in conflict management, and raising youth awareness against violent extremism through citizen marathons.

Florent aspires to become an influential actor in sustainable development, with the ambition of actively involving young people in concrete actions to fight underemployment and strengthen civic participation. He envisions a development model where every young person is a pillar of stability and progress for their community.

His participation in the second cohort of the STAKE EXPERTS professional exchange program is part of his ongoing effort to strengthen his capacities to effectively address issues related to community conflicts.

GBAMBA, an Organization Committed to Social Cohesion and Prosperity

Founded in February 2022 in Copargo, Donga, Benin, the GBAMBA Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to peace, social cohesion, and sustainable development. Its mission is to strengthen community resilience, particularly among young people and women, through initiatives in education, conflict prevention, combating gender-based violence, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Among its achievements are training young people in cashew nut processing and women in shea butter production, with the establishment of local processing units. GBAMBA prioritizes participatory and digital approaches to mobilize communities and enhance cooperation, relying on a structure composed of an executive office, a board of directors, and volunteers to pursue its vision of an environment of peaceful and prosperous communities. Following the CSO Fellowship, GBAMBA plans to reinforce its conflict prevention and community resilience initiatives in the commune of Copargo, develop new projects, and strengthen its partnerships with civil society organizations and local authorities.
